Microorganisms and all other living organisms are classified as prokaryotes or eukaryotes. Prokaryotes and eukaryotes are distinguished on the basis of their cellular characteristics. For example, prokaryotic cells lack a nucleus and other memorane‐bound structures known as organelles, while eukaryotic cells have both a nucleus and organelles (Figure ).
The important cellular features of (a) a prokaryotic cell (a bacterium) and (b) a eukaryotic cell.
Fungi and insect herbivores affect herb diversity depending on species traits of herbs and neighboring tree composition by Zhang Nannan , Chinese Academy of Sciences Credit: Pixabay/CC0 Public Domain The mechanisms of biodiversity maintenance have been a hot topic in ecology for decades. Fungi and insect herbivores contribute to the diversity of plants in grasslands, which has been frequently reported. However, evidence about their driving roles on forest herb diversity is not enough. In a study published in Journal of Ecology , Wang Xugao and Dr. Jia Shihong from the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have conducted a field manipulation experiment in a temperate forest in northeastern China and examined the effects of fungi and insect herbivores on herb diversity by using fungicides and insecticides. The researchers found that fungicides decreased herb diversity by 5%, and that the negative effect was weaker in the ...

JANUARY 16, 2025 How doctors may be able to predict your stroke risk through your eye Written by Corrie Pelc on January 16, 2025 — Fact checked by Jill Seladi-Schulman, Ph.D. Changes in the eye can help predict other health concerns in the body, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. A new study has identified a set of 29 vascular health indicators on the retina, making a “fingerprint” that can help predict a person’s stroke risk. Researchers believe this method provides a less invasive way of testing stroke risk than traditional tests
